Alternate nicotine products have been the popular choice for people trying to quit smoking. So that includes nicotine gums, sprays but the most popular one has been nicotine patches. Approved by the FDA in 1991, nicotine patches are sold over the counter. They also provide a steady dose of nicotine to a person throughout the day. This means you can overtime wean yourself off nicotine, and well, cigarettes too.
Fast forward to years later, and Vaping has now become the new deal for quitting smoking. Electronic cigarettes come in a hundred different types, with a hundred different flavors – sounds impressive, right? And they’re considered to be a safer alternative too. But surely, you’re no stranger to the recent controversies surrounding the vaping and e-cigarette world.
The question here, though, is, what works better? Nicotine patches or Vaping?
Since the FDA backs patches, vaping is relatively new, so there isn’t much research to back it up. Plus, the bad press it gets has people conflicted. So, let’s take a look.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2019, called A Randomized Trial of E-Cigarettes versus Nicotine-Replacement Therapy, concluded that Vaping is twice as effective as nicotine patches to help quit smoking. In this experiment involving 900 participants, 18% opted for vaping and could quit smoking, compared to about 9.9% of those who chose to use the patch.

What you need to keep in mind is that a single nicotine patch is effective for about 24 hours – that means stocking up on patches if you’re trying to kick the habit of smoking. This is not supposed to encourage you to vape. The point is it just seems to be a feasible option – and a less harmful alternative to smoking cigarettes. The only initial investment you would make is buying a device that is usually durable and long-lasting.
